Who am I, anyway?
It's a pleasure to meet you, I'm sure.
My name is Jess L. Jalufka Lance (just Jess, please). I am currently a senior at Duke University, though I am taking a year off to figure out just what I'm doing with myself. For the record, that is one question that remains unanswered. I majored in history for over a year, focusing on humanitarian crises and genocides. Spring 2012 found me switched into an English major with a focus on creative writing, coming full circle. I graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy with a major in creative writing in 2009, only attending one year, with honors in poetry and history. Previous to that, I attended some 15 different public schools across Texas and Arkansas. And no, I do not have a southern accent.
I am married to a U.S. Navy linguist, and he is my perfect compliment. We share a passion for books and helping small animals as well as the outdoors. Our biggest difference lies in our weather preferences -- being from northern Washington, he likes it a bit colder and wetter than this gal from south Texas. And this is another reason I decided to take time off: to enjoy my marriage. I married my husband October 2011 while I was studying in Germany; this time is finally our time.
Customer service is something I'm good at. I worked at Macy's for a couple of summers and at the Duke University Box Office from October 2009 through the present day (except I'm not there, of course, but I have my job when I get back_. I enjoy the challenges of box office work enough to get a job with Global Spectrum in my current location, for now as a ticket seller. I hope to make it through the ranks and ultimately into box office management, possibly as a career.
Math and math-based sciences are something that I'm not good at. I work to make myself better, but they prove to be stubborn, though not insurmountable. You might have noticed I enjoy writing. I do, primarily young adult dystopian fiction, fantasy, and a little bit of YA real world/grit. I struggled with this awful writer's block for three years after leaving Interlochen. After a particularly wonderful professor encouraged me to face my fears, I sucked it up and did it. I'm back in the business and have finally, after 8 attempts, completed NaNoWriMo. That particular story has 65K words, and another 10-15K left it in. But it WILL be done, and I will have achieved one of my major goals.
In my downtime, I enjoy kickboxing, reading, pretending to do art, some DIY crafty things, and trying to catch the feral kittens behind my apartment. For the record, I have caught two so far, both of whom are doing well. I love them dearly, and I am considering, one day, operating a small rescue. I ultimately wish to own a small sheep farm and a cafe/coffeehouse/bookstore, preferably by the ocean. Oh, and I'm a weather-watcher. And I love it. I enjoy lots of blankets, 15 bean soup, chinchillas, and nail polish.
